In the winter months, Randy and Diane Hill like to travel around the US seeking new adventures with their two dogs, Monty and Zephyr.  While in San Diego, California, Diane began having trouble breathing. Randy rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a Pleural Infusion (water in the cavity around her lung). After numerous attempts to drain it and several CT scans, MRI and other tests, it was discovered that Diane had a tumor on her left ovary. “Although not confirmed, we were told that this would very likely be cancer,” said Randy.

Randy reached out to SkyMed. With Diane still in the hospital, it was not clear if they would be going home for the surgery or staying in San Diego. SkyMed advised Randy to get the necessary transportation paperwork filled out either way. An OB Oncologist surgeon performed Diane’s surgery in San Diego the following week. During her recovering time, it was confirmed that she had Stage 2 cancer.

“Only after hearing that we had medical transportation coverage did the doctor allow Diane to leave for Chemo treatments,” said Randy. “Once she was approved for discharge, I called SkyMed, who arranged for Diane to fly with a medical escort to her sister’s home in Buffalo. SkyMed also lined up airport transportation, a wheelchair, and arranged for our friend, Jack, to fly out and help drive the dogs, truck, and trailer home. They also paid for expenses to drive home, including meals, fuel, and lodging.”

How did you find out about SkyMed and why did you choose SkyMed? “We had joined SkyMed six years ago at our first Airstream Rally at Alumapalooza.  We felt with our long-distance travels and Randy being the primary driver, it was important to have coverage that would get us home and return the truck and trailer, and our dogs.”

What would you tell your friends about your experience with SkyMed? “We were both very pleased with the service we received from SkyMed. Without SkyMed, it’s very likely Diane’s treatment would have been delayed as her doctor would not have allowed her to drive across country so soon after surgery.”

Do you have any tips to share on ‘how to’ survive a life challenge? “We recommend anyone who travels long distances for any extended period to get SkyMed protection. We thought it was a good idea in the case Randy was not able to drive our truck and trailer. We never thought something like this would happen!”
