“SkyMed was only a phone call away when I fell and broke my hip playing pickle ball at Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where we were vacationing,” states Joyce Ross. “This 88-year young grandmother lay on the court unable to move. I asked my partner, Bob, to call SkyMed immediately. Those good people assured us that they would arrange all transportation from Mexico to my hospital in Pennsylvania. The paramedics scooped me up and transported me to the Riviera Maya Hospital on that Thursday morning.
Despite a Global IT outage, a SkyMed medevac Learjet was dispatched from Calgary, Canada, and arrived at Cancun lnternational Airport Saturday morning. SkyMed arranged for ambulance transportation from the hospital to the waiting jet where a flight certified paramedic and a flight certified physician greeted me, and I was gently loaded onto the airplane. With all the medical monitors, equipment and IVs attached, the paramedic beside me, the doctor who sat at my feet, Bob and I took off for an incredibly fast and comfortable flight to the Elmira, NY airport, including a quick stop in Charlotte, NC, for refueling and an in-plane check with a friendly immigration officer.
Soon, we were back in the sky to resume our flight home. Thanks to SkyMed, an ambulance was waiting for us at the airport for a quick ride to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania. Dr. Stilwell, the surgeon who had replaced my other hip only two months earlier, scheduled me for surgery the very next morning at 8 am!”
