It was a pleasant evening at the Beothuk RV Park in Grand Falls, Windsor, Newfoundland. Jim and Pat Ensor were participating in a cookout with fellow campers. Around 8:00 P.M., Pat began to feel a burning sensation in the back of her neck. She was taken to the local medical center. Pat was seriously ill. She was in and out of consciousness throughout the night. A CAT SCAN the next morning revealed a cranium full of blood. An aneurism had ruptured.
As so often is the case with RV travel to remote and beautiful places, the local medical center was not capable of providing the medical care and emergency surgery needed to save Pat’s life. She was flown to the regional hospital in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Jim drove the rig so he could stay close to Pat. Jim also contacted SkyMed.
Back in October of 1997, Pat had won $1,400 at a casino in Atlantic City. The first thing she did with her winnings was to buy a 3-year SkyMed membership: something she had been considering for awhile. Little did she realize what a wise purchase she had made! Pat would realize later how much her SkyMed membership would add to her winnings!
The Ensor’s daughter, Sue, had flown to St. John’s to be with her parents. SkyMed paid for this. On Saturday, July 24, a second surgery was performed. Pat was finally discharged from the hospital on Sunday, August 1, 1999.
But the ordeal was not over. SkyMed arranged and paid to fly Bob, the Ensor’s son, to St. John’s to help Jim drive their rig back home. Bob was also to deliver a very important document to Pat, her birth certificate, which she had forgotten. This certificate was necessary for Pat to get back into the United States.
Putting it all in perspective, Jim says, “The Good Lord looked after us all the way through this experience.” Pat shares some words of encouragement herself. “We recommend SkyMed to anyone who travels. To me, SkyMed is security; it is as important as putting on a seat belt.” Jim goes on to say, “We appreciate everything that Dorothy Howell at SkyMed did to help us throughout the entire ordeal.”
